Ulan-Ude is a city with an unusual name for Russia, which is located in the southern part of eastern Siberia, in Western Transbaikalia and is the capital of Buryatia. One of the approximate translations of the name of the city from the Buryat language may sound like «red noon». It is interesting that the famous Lake Baikal is locatednot that dar away to the city, only 100 km to the west — this can attract the interest among tourists. In addition, both the city and the lake are surrounded by a picturesque plateau with hills covered with taiga forest.
An interesting fact is that the capital of Buryatia is one of eight in the world of the so-called pairs of antipode cities, which means that Ulan-Ude is located at the diametrically opposite point of the Earth in relation to the South American Puerto Natales, located in Chile.
How to get to Ulan-Ude
Ulan-Ude is a major railway junction. However, the train journey to the capital of Buryatia is not short; it takes about three days from Moscow by train.
